Google Drive Proxy Whitelist

google drive logo

We recently came across an issue where Google Drive would not install on rebuilt machines or synchronise on existing installations. After finding out the issue was related to the web security proxy we needed to add the Google Drive exceptions to the whitelist for the web proxy.

Thinking that adding “drive.google.com” was enough, we went ahead and added this to the whitelist but it made no difference but eventually, we found the full list of URL’s that you need to add to your proxy whitelists.

So, below is the full list that you should whitelist:

  • www.google.com
  • accounts.google.com
  • clients3.google.com
  • drive.google.com
  • www.googleapis.com
  • ssl.gstatic.com
  • docs.google.com
  • googleusercontent.com

Once you have added these to your whitelist you should find that Google Drive starts to work fully again.

How to add AdSense to Google Sites

google

You may have seen a notification from Google way back in October 2013 that you are not able to just add the HTML/Javascript code to your Google Sites website any longer. This is very strange….you can have a Google website but cannot put Google AdSense on it with any ease? madness!

Anyway, although you cannot just add the code into your Google Site, you can still add Google AdSense code to your site by using a custom URL gadget.

Guide

To do this, first of all you need to create your advert you want to place on your website and take a copy of the code.

Then go into your Google Site and edit the page where you want to add your advert. You should then click Insert and then click More gadgets:

How to add AdSense to Google Sites 2

Then you should select “Add gadget by URL” and you should see where you can enter a new URL:

How to add AdSense to Google Sites 3

You should then enter download the following file and host the XML and then enter the link address into the URL field:

Download Google Adsense Gadget

Then click on the Add button and you should then see a new gadget with these variables:

How to add AdSense to Google Sites 4
<script async src="//pagead2.googlesyndication.com/pagead/js/adsbygoogle.js"></script>
<!-- Ad1 -->
<ins class="adsbygoogle"
     style="display:inline-block;width:300px;height:250px"
     data-ad-client="ca-pub-00000000000000"
     data-ad-slot="0000000000"></ins>
<script>
(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});
</script>

Where these are the parameters you should enter into the fields:

  • 300px = inline-block width
  • 250px = inline-block height
  • 00000000000000 = Publisher ID
  • 0000000000 = Ad Slot

Once you have done this, click the OK button and this should then add your Google AdSense advert to your Google Sites website.

Add-Meta-Tags-and-Descriptions-to-Google-Blogger

If you are a Google Blogger and want to add meta tags and a meta description to your blog, then you can do this by editing the HTML of your template and entering the information that you want.

To do this, login to your Google Blogger control panel and click on the Template option on the left hand side:

Add Meta Tags and Descriptions to Google Blogger 11

You can then select to Edit HTML on your current template:

Add Meta Tags and Descriptions to Google Blogger 12

This will take you into the HTML code of your template. If you are not a technical person then this might seem a bit daunting but do not worry as all you need to do is to add a few simple lines of code to this section.

Meta tag and description information should be inserted into the <head> part of the HTML code, so you should search by clicking into the HTML code and pressing CTRL+H on your keyboard, this should bring up a search box in the top right corner of the HTML code box:

Add Meta Tags and Descriptions to Google Blogger 13

In this search box, you should search for <head> and press the Enter key on your keyboard. This will take you to the part of the code where you want to add your meta information:

Add Meta Tags and Descriptions to Google Blogger 14

As you can see from the above screenshot from our own website, we have already added our tags and description. All you have to do to add yours is to add the following code in between the <head> and </head> section of your HTML code:

Description

<meta content=’DESCRIPTION OF YOUR WEBSITE GOES HERE’ name=’description’/>

Tags and Keywords

<meta content=’your, keywords, separated, by, commas’ name=’keywords’/>

Once you have made the changes that you want to make, click on the Save Template button and that is it!

Search engines will now pickup your tags, keywords and description.

How to add a custom static page to your blog and not adding it to your menu tabs – Google Blogger

Google Blogger Featured Image

We have recently been asked about how to add a static page to Google Blogger, but not have it added to the menu tabs – whilst keeping other tabs in place. So in essence – how to create a hidden custom page.

We use these to give general information on pages without them being added to our menu bar and they can be very helpful. So, below is a guide on how to do this.

Instructions

Login to your Google Blogger control panel and go to your Pages section:

How to add a custom static page to your blog and not adding it to your menu tabs - Google Blogger 15

Then click on New Page and select Blank Page:

How to add a custom static page to your blog and not adding it to your menu tabs - Google Blogger 16

You can now give your new page a title and then type what you require for your new page or add your HTML to it. Once you are complete, you should then click the Publish button:

How to add a custom static page to your blog and not adding it to your menu tabs - Google Blogger 17

This will publish your new page and you will then find that it is now on your tab menu:

How to add a custom static page to your blog and not adding it to your menu tabs - Google Blogger 18

So, we now want to hide this page so it is not on our tab menu and only visible by using a direct link. To do this, you then go into Layout in your Google Blogger control panel:

How to add a custom static page to your blog and not adding it to your menu tabs - Google Blogger 19

You then need to click the Edit link on your Pages section:

How to add a custom static page to your blog and not adding it to your menu tabs - Google Blogger 20

This will take you to all the blank and web linked pages that you have on your blog. On the left side you will see the “Pages to show” list, the ones that are ticked are the ones that will appear in your tab menu, so if you want to remove any, just un-tick the box and then click the Save button at the bottom.

NOTE: above the “Pages to show” section is a “Automatically add new pages when they are published” tick box – if you are adding a number of custom pages, you should un-tick this as this is then not automatically add new pages to your tab menu.

If you now go back to your Blog and take a look at your tab menu, you should notice that the custom page you created is no longer there. But where is it and how do I get to it?

In your control panel, go back to the Pages section:

How to add a custom static page to your blog and not adding it to your menu tabs - Google Blogger 23

If you scroll down, you will now see a “Hidden” section of pages:

How to add a custom static page to your blog and not adding it to your menu tabs - Google Blogger 24

From here, you can Edit, View, Revert to Draft or Delete your page. As we want to get the direct link for the page, click View and the page should pop up in a browser for you:

From your browsers address bar, you can copy the URL and then use this as a direct link to your new custom page.

Google AdSense Error – “The publisher must be associated with the developer account before the developer can invoke operations on the publisher’s account”

Google Adsense

I recently tried to get my Google Adsense working on my blog as you never know, I might make my fortune using it, but when I tried, I got this error:

“The publisher must be associated with the developer account before the developer can invoke operations on the publisher’s account”

After spending some time searching the internet, I finally found the fix for it.

So to fix it, sign in to your Google AdSense account then go to My Account then Account Access.

Then under the section “Access and Authorisation” you should see “view third-party access” with a blogger.com entry like below:

Google AdSense Error - "The publisher must be associated with the developer account before the developer can invoke operations on the publisher's account" 27

Click this link to take you to the third-party access page.

On this page, you need to ensure that the status is set to Enabled like the image below:

Google AdSense Error - "The publisher must be associated with the developer account before the developer can invoke operations on the publisher's account" 28

If yours is not set to Enabled, just click the Enable link under Action.

Once you have done this your Google Adsense should work again.

Remove Google Earth 6 using SCCM

google earth pro MSI logo

Like most other businesses, we have had the issue with users installing Google Earth on their work machines as they dont need local admin to install it.

I’ve been looking into various ways of removing Google Earth using SCCM but most failed. I’ve found the simplest way to do this is to run the following command and advertise it to all machines with Google Earth installed (or you can obviously create a collection with all machines in it with Google Earth installed).

msiexec /uninstall "%temp%._msige61Google Earth.msi" /qn

This takes the Google Earth.msi file that is put into the local users %temp% directory and uninstalls it – this ensures that the correct version of the MSI is used.

You can then create a package or task sequence in SCCM to push this out to users or just add it as an uninstall function within an application.

Google Earth SCCM Uninstall

google earth pro MSI logo

The best way to ensure Google Earth gets removes is to collect the Google Earth.msi file that is put into the %temp% directory when installed – but you have to make sure that you use the correct version for the version installed.

So, create a report in SCCM for all Google Earth installs with file version (let me know if you need a report query for this)- then download the various versions (if there are different ones), install on your own machine or a temp or lab machine, go into the %temp% directory and copy out the Google Earth.msi file.

Then, create a package with this file in it only, then use the following as your Program command line:

msiexec.exe /x google earth.msi /qn

Advertise it where you want to remove it (remember to use the correct version though) and it will work.
