We recently ran into a problem with our System Center Operations Manager (SCOM) console where some old alerts would not allow us to remove or clear them.

We checked that there was not a problem that the alerts were stating so we knew that that could genuinely be removed.

Every time we tried to clear the alerts, we would get a red X generic Microsoft error an the console would crash.

What has caused the issue?

The issue actually turned out to be a problem with the cache on the console, but luckily this is easily fixed.

How to Fix this Issue

Open up an elevated command prompt of the affected machine with the SCOM console installed on it.

Then run the following command:

"C:\Program Files\Microsoft System Center\Operations Manager\Console\Microsoft.EnterpriseManagement.Monitoring.Console.exe" /clearcache

where:

  • “C:\Program Files\Microsoft System Center\Operations Manager\Console\Microsoft.EnterpriseManagement.Monitoring.Console.exe” = the location of your SCOM console installation

This will then load up the SCOM console with the local cache having being cleared.

You should now find that you can clear any remaining SCOM alerts.
