We recently had a problem with our Service Manager database server using massively high RAM usage. It was using up all the RAM we gave it no matter how much extra we allocated to it.

So we needed to try and figure out why it was doing this, like all good IT people, we started Googling!

All the usual tricks were found and a lot of blog posts about setting the top limit of the RAM but all this had already been carried out. But then we stumbled upon a blog post about setting the memory limits within the Analysis Server settings:

Microsoft System Center Service Manager 2012 and SQL Analysis Services

So we tried this out and there it was – no more hitting the top limit of the RAM. We even managed to lower the RAM usage on the virtual machine and everything start to work correctly again.

Update – Does it really work?

We have now had this fix in place for about five weeks and everything is still working fine and we still do not have any high RAM usage, so this seems to have worked perfectly.
