Ultimate Settings Panel – Version 6.1 Demo Video

Techy geeks home

We have finally got around to creating a quick video demo of our latest release of Ultimate Settings Panel.

The main new feature on this release is one that we have been asked for the most. That is for the theme and colour scheme you choose to be saved. This has now been added and whatever you change the theme to, will automatically be saved as soon as you change it.

Video Demo

Below is the video demo which is hosted on YouTube. Feel free to share it!

Microsoft Edge Released for iOS and Android

Techy geeks home

Microsoft have now released Edge for iOS and Android. Personally, I don’t like Edge and use Chrome 99% of the time, but if you are a Microsoft fan and you want their latest browser on your mobile devices then you can grab Edge using the links below:

Downloads

Download Edge for Android

Download Edge for iOS

So what does Edge give you on your mobile devices?

iOS

Taking a look at the iOS release first, the reviews so far seem pretty good with one reviewer stating “God bless this app” – not sure about that, but the list of features are:

  • Continue on PC: Go anywhere and pick up where you left off by seamlessly moving content between your mobile device and PC (requires Windows 10 Fall Creator’s Update).
  • Data Sync: Your favorites, passwords, and reading list are synced across your devices, so no matter the device, your browser is always personalized to you.
  • Hub View: With your favorites, reading list, history and books all in one place, finding and managing your content is made simple.
  • QR Code Reader: Easily read QR codes at the touch of a button. Microsoft Edge will pull up the reading and information right onto your screen.
  • Voice Search: You can now use your voice to search the web. Ask a question or speak a prompt to use the web in more natural, familiar ways.
  • InPrivate: When you browse with InPrivate mode, your browsing data (like your history, temporary internet files, and cookies) isn’t saved on your PC once you’re done.

Android

On the Android side of things, the reviews are pretty good with a 4.3 rating at the time of this post with over 8000 people rating it 5 stars already.

All the features are the same as with the iOS app, but with a completely uninspiring “What’s New?” section stating:

Thanks for using Microsoft Edge. In this update we have improved performance.

I mean come on, surely they can do better than that?!

I’ve tried to use Edge and to be honest, I simply do not like it, but if you are a Microsoft junky and you want it on your iOS or Android (why have you not got a Lumia then?) then go ahead and download it.

Screenshots

Here are a few screenshots for the iPad that I have shamelessly stolen from the iOS download page:

SCCM – User Experience During Application Installation

System Center Configuration Manager SCCM

If you want your end user experience to show them the progress of an installation from your Software Center, then you will need to ensure that you have your command lines and user experience tab setup correctly.

We have seen many people follow the “install in the background and don’t tell anyone the progress” method time and time again, however, how is your end user ever supposed to know if the installation has completed, run or failed? As Configuration Manager admins, obviously we would know by looking at the Software Center and it giving us the information – however, most users are not interested in such things and just want their software installed with a nice pop up box telling them the progress.

So, what should we do to provide the user with the experience that they want?

In simple terms, Configuration Manager will pretty much take care of all this for you if you set up your application deployment correctly.

Go into your application and browse to the Deployment Types tab:

SCCM - User Experience During Application Installation 6

Then edit your deployment type and go into the User Experience tab:

SCCM - User Experience During Application Installation 7

Then within this tab is where your select the options for your end user experience. You can have the application setup so that it is completely hidden and the end user will not get any information apart from that given in the Software Center. To set this up you should use the following selections:

  • Installation behavior: Install for system
  • Logon requirement: Whether or not a user is logged on
  • Installation program visibility: Hidden
  • Allow users to view and interact with the program installation: this would be grayed out with the above selections

This setup would look like this in the User Experience tab:

SCCM - User Experience During Application Installation 8

So, what if you do want to show your end user the software installation progress, but no options for them to have to check or run?

You should then change these settings to the following:

  • Installation behavior: Install for system
  • Logon requirement: Only when a user is logged on
  • Installation program visibility: Normal
  • Allow users to view and interact with the program installation: this should be checked

This setup would look like this in the User Experience tab:

SCCM - User Experience During Application Installation 9

However, a word of warning. In this setup, you will not be able to see the application within an Operating System Deployment Task Sequence as it allows user interaction. So, you could have two deployment types – one for OSD and one for the Software Center.

SCCM – 1802 Upgrade Released & How to get it now!

System Center Configuration Manager SCCM

So Microsoft have today released version 1802 of Current Branch for Configuration Manager. This is great and there are some features in this upgrade that we are looking forward to trying out.

But, on the slow ring, it could be a few days or weeks until it drops into your Configuration Manager Console. That’s bad. So, what can you do if you simply must have the update NOW!

Well, head over to the TechNet Gallery and download the fast ring script which will give you immediate access to the upgrade. The link is available here:

Download

Download ConfigMgr 1802 Fast Ring Script

Instructions

Once you have downloaded it, you should then open up a PowerShell command prompt and then run the following command:

EnableFastUpdateRing1802.ps1 CM01

where:

  • CM01 = your site server name

This will then very quickly run through the fast ring script. You should then go into your Configuration Manager Console and click on the Administration ribbon and then onto the Updates and Servicing branch:

SCCM - 1802 Upgrade Released & How to get it now! 10

Then go ahead and click on the Check for updates button on the top ribbon bar and then also click the Refresh button:

SCCM - 1802 Upgrade Released & How to get it now! 11

You should then notice that the update will start downloading:

SCCM - 1802 Upgrade Released & How to get it now! 12

Once that has completed it will change to Ready to install:

SCCM - 1802 Upgrade Released & How to get it now! 13

You can then go ahead and run your Prerequisite check and if all comes back good, go ahead and install the update.

SCCM – Active Directory Security Group Query for User Collection

microsoft black logo

If you are looking at setting up a SCCM user collection based on membership of an Active Directory Security Group, then you can use this WQL query for the collection.

WQL Script

To set this up, create a new collection and copy and paste this as its query:

select
SMS_R_USER.ResourceID,
SMS_R_USER.ResourceType,
SMS_R_USER.Name,
SMS_R_USER.UniqueUserName,
SMS_R_USER.WindowsNTDomain
from
SMS_R_User
where SMS_R_User.SecurityGroupName = "DomainADSecurityGroup"

Variables

You can add or remove any of the SMS_R_USER columns from the select statement but the part you will need to change is:

  • “DomainADSecurityGroup” – this should be changed to the name of your own domain and after the then change this for the object name of your security group.

Then go ahead and save this query and from within your SCCM console, update the collection and you should now see all the users within the security group, in your new collection.

First of all, you will require an elevated command prompt. So, click the Start button and type in CMD which should bring up the command prompt option in your start menu, instead of left clicking the command prompt, right click on it and select Run as Administrator:

How to take ownership of a Windows File 14

This will then open up an elevated command prompt as you can see from the top of the window:

How to take ownership of a Windows File 15

Then type in the following commands, hitting the Enter key after each one:

  • takeown /F “PATH TO FILE”
  • icacls “PATH TO FILE” /grant administrators:F
