Group Policy Error 0x8007000d in Server Event Log

microsoft

We recently dealt with an issue for a customer where a few of their server event logs where full of Group Policy errors. The error in question was:

Event Type: Error
Event Source: Group Policy Local Users and Groups
Event Category: (2)
Event ID: 8194
Date: 30/06/2017
Time: 10:27:12 AM
User: NT AUTHORITYSYSTEM
Computer: WINDC1
Description:
The client-side extension could not remove computer policy settings for ‘{SPID}’ because it failed with error code ‘0x8007000d The data is invalid.’ See trace file for more details.

This is down to an issue with file required to apply the group policy – an XML file that has either not downloaded or corrupted (which could be for a multitude of reasons).

So to fix it, you need to delete the Group Policy cache and then reapply the Group Policy.

INSTRUCTIONS

Open File Explorer and go to the following location:

%ALLUSERSPROFILE%Application DataMicrosoftGroup PolicyHistory

You should then find all of the Group Policy cache folders:

Delete all the folders in that location and then open a command prompt. Run the following command:

gpupdate /force

You should then see that the sub folders have reappeared in the Group Policy cache location above and you should then find that the errors will stop and the Group Policy will apply correctly.
