More Than Just a Search Engine: Google’s Best, Failed, Unknown Products

When you’re #1 in the online market, way ahead of everything else, it’s obvious that there’s a lot of work behind you – many failed projects, trial and errors, and not-so-famous products that represent the foundation of the success everyone else sees.

Google’s story is no different. We all know about the search engine, about YouTube, Gmail or Google Maps, but Google, too, has a lot of abandoned or unheard-of projects.

Google Answers is probably familiar to many of you. It was a platform similar to Yahoo! Answers, where users could pay for well-documented research. It was launched in 2002 and closed in 2007 because people preferred getting their answers for free.

Another niche where apparently Google still has things to learn is social media. They launched Dodgeball in 2005, which was replaced by Google Latitude in 2009. It was a location-specific social site that didn’t have much success. One year later, they released Jaiku, which was a microblogging social network, similar to Twitter (this similarity brought the end of Jaiku in 2011).

In 2008, they released Google Lively, a 3D-animated chat program that only lasted 6 months. Probably the fact that only Windows OS supported it had something to do with this short life span.

In 2009, Google Wave was born. It was a platform that combined social networking with media sharing, but one year later the developers ceased their work due to lack of interest. In 2010, there was Google Buzz, which combined the social networking and news feed with messaging, file sharing, and microblogging. In 2012, Google Buzz was discontinued on behalf of certain privacy settings and legal issues.

The most recent social media platform from Google is Google+, released in 2012. Although it wasn’t officially abandoned, it is clear that it failed as a social networking point – even in there are over 1 billion accounts, no one uses this aspect of it.

If this isn’t the definition of perseverance, then which one is?

Besides these trials and errors, Google has some awesome programs, such as Waze, Google Arts and Culture or AdMob, that are not very popular yet.

Waze is the best app to use if you’re having a trip. It sends you real-time info on the traffic, it estimates the arrival time very accurately, and it informs you on any obstacle (Police included) ahead. All you need to do is choose one of the routes it suggests, and keep your phone charged (it takes up a lot of your battery)!

Google Arts and Culture is an app available only for Android devices for the moment. As you might intuit, it allows you to visit cultural spaces from more than 1200 museums and sites, all thanks to Google Street View 360° technology!

Last, but not least, AdMob is the best platform where you can promote and monetize mobile apps. There are 1 million users that respond to 200b ad requests monthly, and it is available on Android, iOS, C++, and Unity. In 2012, it received Mobile Premier Award, and it’s constantly growing since then!

What Makes Reliable Retail Software Make News

microsoft black logo

SAP Hybris is one of the first B2C e-commerce suite providers since its inception recognized for ensuring a consistent and intuitive shopping experience. No wonder, ‘The Forrester Wave: B2C Commerce Suites, Q1 2017’ Report enlists it as one of the 13 leading B2C commerce suite providers. To quote the report, “SAP Hybris continues to be a favorite because of its stability, large global implementation partner network, and vertical industry solution focus.” Additionally, it is also known for being a capable e-commerce platform that is well suited for organizations across verticals. In the competitive marketplace, e-commerce companies, like all other businesses, are looking for a reliable platform that ensures enhanced accuracy.

Another feather on its cap is Gartner naming it as the leader in digital commerce for delivering seamless customer experience. Delighting customers consistently and garnering their loyalty are some of the foremost expectations from retail software platforms.

Microsoft Dynamics AX is another retail platform that offers multi-channel versatility and greater reliability through Big Data analytics. Both of these cloud software can be integrated with the existing systems being used by businesses, helping them in adopting and adapting to changing market conditions.

These retail software platforms have made their mark in the last few decades and are one of the most essential business hacks for retail businesses to drive scalability.

Let’s discuss what makes retail software make it to the news consistently:

  1. Improve accuracy of data analytics results

Retail software aids in quick, real-time data collection. This data improves the accuracy of valuable insights, boosting business decision-making. Advanced reporting features closely study customer behavior, what they are interested in, what they are purchasing and their preferred channels of purchase. This not only improves internal business intelligence but become actively involved in solving business problems. What’s more, pre-empting problems have also become a reality.

Instant access to stock levels due to streamlined integration of digital and in-store POS and bar-coding features helps store staff to keep a close tab on the inventory and replenish it accordingly.

  1. Contribute to customer satisfaction

Customer experience features topmost in the minds of retailers. Automated tracking of inventory real-time enables them to display the accurate stock level display that helps them to ensure the confidence of the buyers and drive more purchases.

Advanced customer care features are an integral part of inventory management systems, helping retailers to create personalized marketing campaigns. Easy usability of the features of your POS systems and stock management system, along with the web-connected interface, further explains how these software aids retailers to contribute to customer satisfaction. The ease of use enhances productivity of the store staff, helping them to deliver quick in-store results.

  1. Enhance omni-channel experiences

At a time when the importance of seamless customer experience cannot be sufficiently stressed upon, omni-channel marketing emerges as one of the top retail trends. Upgrading to smart retail software that keeps an eye on e-commerce and POS systems serves as an effective channel to understand customers better and deliver accordingly. The ever-changing customer needs, demands and purchasing behavior compel retailers to appeal to their existing audience and also reach out to a wider target audience. In the competitive market, a unified approach for effective inventory management has no substitute because of their reliability.

  1. Count on the cloud

Cloud technology has been making headlines for a few years now and understandably so! A combination of reliability and flexibility of retail software on the cloud is the way forward for businesses to ensure seamless customer experience. Its ability to drive automated updating and necessary customizations also make it score among retailers.

  1. Ensure higher cash flow

Inventory management system has proved to be as important as the point of sale software. It helps retailers to regular their inventory flow through the unified system. The current stock at various locations helps them to keep themselves updated regarding the remaining stock and take decisions on the replenishment of stock across locations. It helps them to gauge the demand for their products in advance and reduce the stock for slow-moving products. While predicting stock demand was impossible several decades before, it was an expensive proposition when equipments and software packages came into being. To top it, maintaining the equipments cost further. A centralized inventory management software not only is a convenient solution but also cost-effective.

Integrate a reliable software for your retail business, if you haven’t already, to deliver a seamless customer experience.

Enable Windows Hello Feature

If you are trying to use Windows Hello to use your face to login to a domain connected device (like a Surface Pro 4 for example) then you may find that the option to set it up is greyed out and not available to you.

This seems to be some sort of Microsoft bug and we have never found any definitive reason for why this happens, but we have found the fix for it.

You need to make a small registry edit on your device. You can do this manually, download and run a .reg file from us or you can always use Group Policy.

Method 1 – Edit the registry manually

So, you go into regedit by clicking the Start button and typing regedit and press the Enter key. Then browse to the following location:

You then need to create a DWORD with the following values:

  • DWORD Name = AllowDomainPINLogon
  • Value = 1
Enable Windows Hello Feature 2

Reboot your device and you should notice that you can now set your Windows Hello feature up.

Method 2 – Download a reg file

You can download a .reg file from us using the button below:

Download Windows Hello Registry Fix

Then, just unzip the package and double click the .reg file. Allow it to make the change to your device and reboot. Again, you should now see that this Windows Hello feature is now available for you.

Method 3 – Group Policy

If your device is on a domain then you can create a Group Policy to apply this fix to multiple devices. Open up Group Policy and create a new Group Policy Object (or edit an existing one if you wish).

Then, go to the following location in the GPO:

Computer configuration > Administrative templates > Windows Components > Biometric

Then set the following  settings:

  • Allow domain users to log on using biometrics: Enabled
Enable Windows Hello Feature 3

Then browse to this location in the GPO:

Computer configuration > Administrative templates > Windows Components > Windows Hello for Business

You should check that none of the settings are amended in this part of the GPO and all are set to Not configured:

Enable Windows Hello Feature 4

Deploy the GPO to where you need to and this should enable Windows Hello.

Group Policy Error 0x8007000d in Server Event Log

microsoft black logo

We recently dealt with an issue for a customer where a few of their server event logs where full of Group Policy error. The error in question was:

Event Type: Error
Event Source: Group Policy Local Users and Groups
Event Category: (2)
Event ID: 8194
Date: 30/06/2017
Time: 10:27:12 AM
Computer: WINDC1
The client-side extension could not remove computer policy settings for ‘{SPID}’ because it failed with error code ‘0x8007000d The data is invalid.’ See trace file for more details.

For more information, see Help and Support Center at .

This is down to an issue with file required to apply the group policy – an XML file that has either not downloaded or corrupted (which could be for a multitude of reasons).

So to fix it, you need to delete the Group Policy cache and then reapply the Group Policy.

Group Policy Error Fix Instructions

Open File Explorer and go to the following location:

%ALLUSERSPROFILE%Application DataMicrosoftGroup PolicyHistory

You should then find all of the Group Policy cache folders:

Group Policy Error 0x8007000d in Server Event Log 5

Delete all the folders in that location and then open a command prompt. Run the following command:

gpupdate /force

You should then see that the sub folders have reappeared in the Group Policy cache location above and you should then find that the errors will stop and the Group Policy will apply correctly.
