Update – Manchester Bombing

With the events of the last week, we have not been reading emails or posting anything on our site as you may have noticed. We are based and live in Manchester and it has been a truly shocking and upsetting week for our city and the people that live here.

Everyone will know the circumstances of what has happened in Manchester by now and we must move on and look forward and never let hate win. The way that everyone has pulled together and helped in any way that they can, be it giving blood, donating food and drink from local takeaways, free taxis, providing a place a stay for people left stranded or donating cash to help the families really does restore your faith in humanity.

22 innocent people, mostly women and children were killed, at the point of writing this post, 23 are still critical with “horrific” injuries.

Our site has a large amount of visitors each day which gives us the platform to try and help these victims. So we are asking that if you can, please make a donation, no matter how big or how small, to the British Red Cross and Manchester Evening News who are trying to raise £2,000,000 for the families.

You can visit their JustGiving page by clicking the button below:

Donate to the British Red Cross Fund

If you make a donation, please leave us a comment below so that we can thank you personally and know ourselves that we have helped in some small way.

Thank you.

How smart tech is taking over our homes

9603416665 3b4a374ba8 b1

Most of us will now probably have a smart TV in our homes that’s capable of streaming movies and playing online games. But smart technology is about so much more than this as the interconnected nature of the latest home gadgets looks to make our homes feel very futuristic indeed.

Security advances

The humble lock on your front door has remained fairly unchanged for decades. But all of that looks to change with remotely lockable front doors. Whilst this sounds fairly unexciting, it’s proven to be massively handy in allowing guests to enter our homes whilst we’re out and about.

The same goes for the latest wave of smart security cameras that give us the very 21st-century way to remotely monitor what’s happening in our home and garden from the convenience of our smartphone displays.

Electronic assistance

The biggest change in our homes has already arrived with the likes of Amazon’s Alexa. These incredible gadgets are able to act as our digital butlers and can do a huge range of tasks from rating a movie on IMDB to adjusting the temperature of your central heating.

Whilst this incredible technology is still unable to carry out a full conversation, it shows how our smart gadgets are now able to assist us in even the most mundane tasks.

Smart entertainment

The arrival of the smart TV has certainly broadened our viewing entertainment. From being able to use your TV to make a video-chat on the big screen to turning your home into a casino thanks to the Lucky Nugget Casino gaming site, our televisions are once again becoming the central part of our entertainment.

But it’s the way that Sonos’ multi-room speaker set-up can help control audio in different rooms of the house that once again shows how smart technology gives us the perfect way to be lazier than ever.

Food technology

Smart technology has also given us plenty of interesting additions to the kitchen. From smart frying pans that aim to help us make the ultimate fried egg, to smart refrigerators with internal cameras so that you can check the contents from afar, it shows how there are few areas of home-life that can’t be brought into the 21st century.

And whilst smart toothbrushes might not be quite ready to become mass consumer items, there’s no denying that everything from playing casino games to remotely checking our security just got a whole lot easier!

To make your home smart, try to place Aicool Smart Trash Can in your kitchen, living room, etc.

How to disable SMBv1

Following on from the ransomware attacks of the last few days, you should have by now patched all your servers and clients using the Windows Update that relates to your operating system (see list and download links at the end of this post).

If you want more security around this then you should also disable the SMBv1 where possible. Just keep in mind that older systems and things like network scanners will use it.

To disable it, see below an extract from Microsoft on how to do it:

Windows 8 and Windows Server 2012

Windows 8 and Windows Server 2012 introduce the new Set-SMBServerConfiguration Windows PowerShell cmdlet. The cmdlet enables you to enable or disable the SMBv1, SMBv2, and SMBv3 protocols on the server component.

ou do not have to restart the computer after you run the Set-SMBServerConfiguration cmdlet.

  • To obtain the current state of the SMB server protocol configuration, run the following cmdlet:
    Get-SmbServerConfiguration | Select EnableSMB1Protocol, EnableSMB2Protocol
  • To disable SMBv1 on the SMB server, run the following cmdlet:
    Set-SmbServerConfiguration -EnableSMB1Protocol $false
  • To enable SMBv1 on the SMB server, run the following cmdlet:
    Set-SmbServerConfiguration -EnableSMB1Protocol $true

Windows 7, Windows Server 2008 R2, Windows Vista, and Windows Server 2008

To enable or disable SMB protocols on an SMB Server that is running Windows 7, Windows Server 2008 R2, Windows Vista, or Windows Server 2008, use Windows PowerShell or Registry Editor.

Windows PowerShell 2.0 or a later version of PowerShell

  • To disable SMBv1 on the SMB server, run the following cmdlet:
    Set-ItemProperty -Path “HKLM:SYSTEMCurrentControlSetServicesLanmanServerParameters” SMB1 -Type DWORD -Value 0 -Force
  • To enable SMBv1 on the SMB server, run the following cmdlet:
    Set-ItemProperty -Path “HKLM:SYSTEMCurrentControlSetServicesLanmanServerParameters” SMB1 -Type DWORD -Value 1 -Force

NHS UK Ransomware Attack – What to do to protect yourself and your business

Today the NHS in the UK has come under attack from a ransomware attack causing hug damage to their systems which has had a knock-on affect with patients including cancelled appointments and operations.

This attack seems to have been able to attack the NHS due to outdated systems allowing the attack access through the Microsoft vulnerability which is patched in Microsoft Security Bulletin MS17-010This update was released in March 17.

This update is available through both Windows Update and the Microsoft Update Catalog.

To protect yourself, your customers or your in house users, you should ensure that all user machines are fully up to date with their software updates and also ensure that any filestore servers or shares anywhere on your network are protected by fully patching these servers.

As we get any further information we will post here. Good luck and take care out there!

Recover Lost files with EaseUS Data Recovery Software

Logo EaseUS

Ever came up with the situation when you deleted some important files of yours by mistake. Then you wished if those files could be recovered but all you did was wishing. Not anymore, Now Recover Deleted Files easily by Free Data Recovery Software i.e. “EaseUS Data Recovery Software”; a very user-friendly software.

EaseUS Data Recovery Software comes up with two versions. One version is for Windows and the other is for Mac. Here, to show you how much user-friendly this software is, I will show you how it works on Windows.

Extracting the Data Recovery Software:

The program is very easy to install. The (exe.) File takes minutes to download and install. Installation wizard is just a simple clicking process without any complications.

After installation process, the Software will launch automatically if you have allowed it during installation process.

Hands-on the Software:

When you open the software, you do not get a big menu in front of you, a few icons at the top which cover everything from language to the help section. A very clean UI which makes this software user friendly.

1st Step (What to Search):

First at the home window, choose which type of file or files you are searching for. A document, Graphics, Audio, Video, Email or others. Check the required boxes and click next.

On next screen, you are required to choose which area you want the wizard to look at to find the files. Only one location at a time can be searched to make sure the software works well.

2nd Step (Quick Scan):

Quick scan as shows is a fast option that gives quick response. It takes less than 5 minutes for this Free Data Recovery Software to complete a quick scan. By Clicking the Scan option, you start the quick scan which lasts in about 5 minutes. Normally, files are found by the quick scan. If files are not found, follow the 3rd Step.

3rd Step (Deep Scan):

If the files are not found by the quick scan, then you can Recover deleted files by applying the Deep Scan. The Deep scan will take a good 2 to 3 hours to search every single folder on your computer. It will scan 100 times more files then the quick scan.

This scan takes a longer period, so EaseUS recovery wizard gives this option to users to preview all the files that are recovered while the scan is still in progress. If you find the required file, you can stop the search right there.

4th Step (Recover the Data):

When you complete the scanning process and find the required files, you need to click on the required files and then click on the Recover option at the Bottom-Right Corner. Then Choose the file destination, where you want to save the file. It’s better not to choose the destination where the file was previously placed because a possible reason you lost that file can be the damaged drive.

Save the Scan Results:

You can also save the scan results by clicking on “Export Scan Status” which will create a file for you as a Recovery State File. Later on, these results can be imported by clicking on “Import Scan Status” at the top of the window.

Free Trial:

The software only charges from you after you make sure that this software can actually recover files for you. The software allows free scan to find the required files. But if you want to recover the file, you need to buy the Software. They allow you to check the software before spending money on it so that you make sure this software is really helpful.

We are Crowdfunding!

We have provided free technical guides to home and business users for over 6 years now. Over the last few years we have also branched out in to creating custom software for free. With a total of over 8 million hits in these 6 years, our small blog based site has become much bigger than we could have even imaged.

However, success comes with a high price tag. The hosting that we are using is basic and still the same from when we started out getting 10 hits a day if we were lucky. With the large amount of hits we are now getting, the hosting is simply not good enough as you can probably tell from the slow speed of our site. We need to invest in getting much better hosting but also new caching services, CDN, downloading management software and also we need to make the site more secure by purchasing a wildcard SSL certificate for our main site and all the sub-sites that run alongside it.

Our bandwidth has also gone through the roof as has the disk space we require. As an example of what we are currently using in terms of resource, see the list below:

  • 280GB of disk space
  • 2GB RAM server usage (constant on average)
  • 450GB of bandwidth usage per month

So, we are looking to try and raise funds to keep our website and software free and enable us to launch more free products and keep providing excellent user guides through Crowdfunding.

If you feel that you can help us out, please click the link below and donate if you can. Every penny counts so we are very grateful for any donation that you may be able to provide.
