Re-enable NPAPI in Google Chrome

google

You may have recently noticed that if you are a Google Chrome user – your plugins have started to not work in certain situations. This can be for flash, silverlight or shockwave amongst others. This is the start of the end for NPAPI.

Well, there is a reason for this….

On the Chromium blog there has been an announcement that Google things we do not require such things so have started to stop them from working, but do not fear as there is a way around it.

If you want to re-enable your own plugins, you should take a good read of the blog update below:

The Final Countdown for NPAPI

This basically means that if you go to the following URL in your Google Chrome browser, you can re-enable the NPAPI settings:

chrome://flags/#enable-npapi

Re-enable NPAPI in Google Chrome 1

However, this will only be available until September 2015 and then NPAPI will be dead forever.

Adobe Reader DC MSI File Installers and Silent Installation

Adobe Reader DC version 2001

Adobe Reader DC MSI File Installers and Silent Installation 2Adobe have now released a completely new version of their Acrobat Reader software and are now calling it Adobe Reader DC. This is to fit in with their new more cloud based systems that they now use and they have added some neat little features and tidied up the user interface, but at the end of the day, it is simply a PDF reader.

So you want to distribute the new version through Group Policy, WDS, SCCM etc? then you will want the MSI installer rather than the nasty, hard to silent install EXE files that Adobe roll out by default. The good news is, we have the links for the MSI installers!

You can download the MSI installers from our Download microsite:

Java Client Silent Installation Guide

Java MSI

In some of our previous guides we have shown you how to extract the MSI and CAB files for the easy deployment of the Java Client.

Well, it seems that this method no longer works with the newer versions so we thought we would update you with how to install silently with all the options that go with it.

To do this, you will need to use the Offline Installer that Java supply and then add on the parameters that you require for your own environment. Below you will find the download link for getting the offline installer and also the parameters, switches and examples for a silent install.

The offline installer command has following syntax:

<jre>.exe [/s] [INSTALLDIR=:] [STATIC=1] [WEB_JAVA=0/1] [WEB_JAVA_SECURITY_LEVEL=VH/H/M/L]

where:

  • <jre>.exe is the single executable installer for Java
  • /s, if used, indicates silent installation
  • INSTALLDIR, if used, specifies the drive and path of the JRE.
  • If INSTALLDIR is not specified, the installation will go into C:Program Filesjavajre (default location).
  • STATIC=1, if used, specifies a static installation.
  • WEB_JAVA=0, if used, disables any Java application from running in the browser.
  • WEB_JAVA=1, the default, enables Java applications in the browser.
  • WEB_JAVA_SECURITY_LEVEL: if used, sets the security level of unsigned Java apps running in a browser. The possible values for this field are V (very high), H (high), M (medium, the default) or L (low).

Java Client Basic Install

Suppose the Java installer is jre-7-windows-i586.exe and you want to install the following configuration:

  • Perform a Windows Installation
  • Install the JRE core, additional fonts, colors, and Soundbank

The command to install the above mentioned configuration is as follows:

jre-7-windows-i586.exe /s

Java Client Advanced Install

Suppose the JRE installer is jre-7-windows-i586.exe and you want to install the following configuration:

  • Perform a Windows Offline Installation and install the JRE on D drive at javajre
  • Have all features of the JRE installed

The command to install the above mentioned configuration is as follows:

jre-7-windows-i586.exe /s INSTALLDIR=D:\java\jre

Note: To keep the MS-DOS window open, until the installation of Java is complete use the start /w command as follows:

start /w jre-7-windows-i586.exe /s

Creating a Log File

Log file can be used to verify if an installation succeeded. To create a log file describing the installation append /L C:setup.log to the install command and scroll to the end of the log file to verify.

The following is an example for installation:

jre-7-windows-i586.exe /s /L C:setup.log

The above command causes the log to be written to the setup.log file, this is our personal favourite and we have the log file point to a server share so that we can keep an eye on any failed log file installations.
