We are asked a lot both in a professional context and through this website about how first line techs can use the remote control functionality that Configuration Manager gives us without giving out access to the full Configuration Manager Console.
Well, the answer is fairly simple, if your client machines have the Configuration Manager client installed on them then you can extract the remote tool from your ConfigMgr server (or another console installation…) and give this to your first line techs.
So, how do you do this?
Before you do anything, you need to ensure that you add the user accounts of the techs you want to give access to remote control tools into the “Remote Tools Operators” role based security group in the Administration workspace in the ConfigMgr console as per below:
Once you have given out the correct permissions, you then need to extract the files from either a machine with the ConfigMgr Console on it or the main server. You should go to the location where you installed your ConfigMgr Console, for the purposes of this guide we will use the default location which is:
%programfiles%\Microsoft Configuration Manager\Admin\Console\bin\i386
This location is where the files you require are, you should then find and copy to a new folder on your machine the following files in this location:
- 00000409 (this is a folder – copy the entire folder)
Once you have these in a new folder and you have named your new folder appropriately (i.e. ConfigMgr Remote Tool) then you can copy this to a USB drive or to any first line tech machine and simply run the cmrcviewer.exe file to start the remote tool.
